REBEL FC 5 – Battle Royale: Quest for Glory on 12 August 2017 played to a full-house of vociferous fans at the upscale Kerry Hotel at Pudong district in Shanghai, China. The fights were fast and furious. The key battles were the two welterweight semi-finals featuring international superstars Adriano Balby (Brazil), David Hulett (USA), Andy Wang (China) and Makoto Maeda (Japan).
Both Andy and Adriano progressed into the grand final where the two of them locked horns through three gruelling rounds. Adriano eventually won via unanimous decision and lifted the inaugural REBEL FC Welterweight Champions’ Cup. For Andy, despite losing, he can take comfort he did well against two tough opponents (Makoto and Adriano). It was a moral victory and catapulted Andy back into the MMA limelight after not competing in MMA for 6 years.
The night also saw another prestigious bout – the interim REBEL FC Featherweight championship fight where the title holder will go up against reigning REBEL FC Featherweight champion, Kleber Koike of Brazil. Rodolfo Marques Diniz of Australia had the honour of being the interim REBEL FC Featherweight Champion after defeating Nagakura Tatsunao of Japan. The win was a controversial one as Nagakura was deemed to have given Rodolfo an illegal soccer kick and therefore disqualified during the first round.
In another main fight of the night, rising young China star, Niu Kang Kang defeated Akhmad Donchev of Russia via TKO in the first round after an intense back and forth showcase of kicking, grappling and punching prowess from both fighters.
